Masaka, The Home of The Uganda Marathon
The Uganda Marathon is held in Masaka Town, in the Masaka District. This town is based not far from the banks of Lake Victoria, right on the main road from Kampala to Mbarara, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Kigali.
Travelling to Masaka
The journey from Kampala to Masaka takes between three & three and a half hours and can be done by bus or by private taxi.
- By bus: There are frequent buses or Matatus that leave from the New Taxi Park in Kampala, heading to Masaka costing between 10,000 and 12,000 shillings
- By Private Taxi: You can book a taxi that will take you to Masaka from Kampala for approximately $60.
The race starts at 07:00am, so you will need to find accommodation locally in the town. There is a lot of choice for all budgets and tastes so you’ll have no problem choosing the perfect hotel or guesthouse for your trip to Masaka.

What to do in Masaka
The Uganda Marathon will take place on Saturday June 1st, at 07:00am. The ceremony and finish line celebrations will finish around 2:30pm, but there is plenty more to do in Masaka to make a full weekend of your stay.
- Travel to Lake Mburo for a mini safari. This compact gem is a short drive from Masaka and you’ll see zebra, leopard, impala, buffalo, hippo, hyena, topi among 350 species of birds and many more animals.
- Get dinner at Plot 99, a chilled out Belgian-Dutch owned coffeehouse that serves everything from Belgian fries to thin crust pizza – with great coffee and a spectacular view!
